WASHINGTON—Archbishop Thomas Wenski and Bishop Oscar Cantú welcomed a new resolution introduced in Congress, September 17, by a group of Republican legislators.

“The bishops welcome the commitment of a group of Members of Congress to engage in constructive dialogue, and work together in Congress to address climate change and protect our common home,” said Archbishop Wenski in response to the announcement of a Congressional resolution sponsored by several Republican members in the House of Representatives, including Congressman Chris Gibson.

Archbishop Wenski is the Archbishop of Miami, and chairman of the Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

Archbishop Wenski said, “The U.S. bishops stand united with the Holy Father in his call to protect creation and our common home for the well-being of current and future generations.”

“The cosponsors of this resolution set a positive example for government leaders, heeding Pope Francis’ call in his encyclical Laudato Si’ to engage in positive dialogue to address what Pope Francis has called ‘one of the principal challenges facing humanity in our day,’ climate change,” said Bishop Oscar Cantú. “It is our hope that this modest first step opens the door to joining Democrat members of Congress who have been active in seeking conversation and solutions for the country and the world.”

Bishop Cantú is the Bishop of Las Cruces, and chairman of the Committee on International Justice and Peace of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).

The news comes amid a recent pledge by 169 Catholic college and university leaders worldwide, including nearly 100 U.S. presidents, to implement Pope Francis’s message on climate change. The declaration of commitment was coordinated by the Ignatian Solidarity Network. 96 leaders in U.S. Catholic higher education joined nearly 80 Catholic university presidents from 32 other nations in signing a statement of support and a public commitment to “study, promote, and act on the ideals and vision of integral ecology laid out by Pope Francis.”
