PROGRAM OVERVIEW:
Immersion experience coordinators provide significant leadership for college and university service/cultural/justice immersion programs that have become integral Jesuit education today. The Ignatian Immersion Experience Coordinator Summit will provide a relevant space for Jesuit college and university immersion experience coordinators working in ministry, service-learning/academics and student affairs to participate in meaningful reflection and discussion about their work to engage students in the “gritty reality of the world” (Kolvenbach, 2000, Santa Clara University).
The Summit will include:
- Opening Keynote/Dialogue with Charlie Currie, S.J. (former president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges & Universities)
- Significant time for discussion and dialogue about what is happening at each individual’s campus
- Development of an electronic resource bank hosted on the ISN website;
- Facilitated presentations that relate to the work of immersion experience coordinators;
- Reflection and sharing;
Discussion areas could include the following:
- Program funding
- Partner/Host organizations
- Professional development ideas/methods
- Goals of a “Jesuit university immersion”
- Trends in higher education related to global/service learning
- Integration of faith/spirituality and specifically Ignatian spirituality into programs
- Program assessment
- Liability and risk management
- Group formation and post-experience reflection
- Potential for cross-university collaboration
The program will be developed by a group of immersion coordinators with support from the Ignaitan Solidarity Network staff. Those interested in being involved with planning should contact Chris Kerr at ckerr@ignatiansolidarity.net.
