This past November many of the delegations from high schools and universities across the country who attended the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice found time to visit the Dr. Martin Luther King Memorial on Washington DC’s Mall. They shared stories of taking time for prayer and reflection and the inspiration they felt as they encountered the images and quotations present at the memorial. One university student commented, “How could I come to Washington, DC for a ‘social justice’ teach-in and not visit Dr. King’s memorial?”
How has your passion for social justice been inspired by Dr. King’s life?
I was at the ISN Teach-in in November and my youth group had a little prayer service on Friday night at MLK’s memorial. It was one of my favorite parts of the weekend. I always knew he was a great upstander for civil rights and cooperation, but the extent of my knowledge about him was limited. I got Colman McCarthy’s Peace Studies textbook while at the Teach-in, and before I participated in the MLK Day of Service yesterday, I read some of King’s works as well as McCarthy’s essay about him. What I learned was that King was far more than a civil rights activist. His example of including all people and living the Word in his daily life inspires me to work for the same goals of peace and justice.
