Ignatian Solidarity Network Welcomes New Directors: Fred Kammer S.J., Brent Otto S.J. & Scott Powers
UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS, OHIO – The Ignatian Solidarity Network (ISN) Board of Directors has unanimously voted to welcome Fred Kammer, S.J., Brent Otto, S.J., and Scott Powers, as directors. The new members of ISN’s national governance board will serve three year terms.
The Ignatian Solidarity Network (ISN) is a national social justice education and advocacy organization inspired by the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola. ISN works primarily with individuals connected with Jesuit universities, high schools, parishes, and social ministries throughout the United States. Constituencies include students, faculty, parish members and staff, alumni, current and former Jesuit Volunteer Corps members, and many others. Fred Kammer, S.J., currently serves as the director of the Jesuit Social Research Institute at Loyola University of New Orleans. From 2002 to 2008, Kammer was provincial superior for the Jesuits of the New Orleans Province. He served as president of Catholic Charities USA, the nation’s largest voluntary social service network, from 1992 to 2001. From 1990 to 1992 he was policy advisor for health and welfare issues at the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. From 1984 to 1989, he was the executive director of Catholic Community Services of Baton Rouge, and he served as director of the Senior Citizens Law Project of the Atlanta Legal Aid Society from 1977 to 1983. Fr. Kammer entered the Society of Jesus in 1963 and was ordained a priest in 1976. A native of New Orleans, he has been a board member of Georgetown University and Loyola University New Orleans.
Brent H. Otto, S.J., is a Jesuit from New England. He joined the Jesuits in 2004 and is currently studying theology at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University and will be ordained a priest in two years. Prior to joining the Jesuits Brent was a history teacher, and teaching has continued to be part of his life as a Jesuit. He has completed graduate degrees in international history at Columbia University and the London School of Economics, and subsequently taught at St. Peter’s University in New Jersey. Brent attended his first Ignatian Family Teach-In in 2003 with some of his students, and has since been involved with ISN along with other students at the Jesuit School of Theology.
Scott Powers, current serves as the Director of Christian Service at Jesuit High School in Portland, Oregon. He has worked in Catholic education for over 20 years as a teacher, administrator and coach. Scott was chair of the steering committee for the founding of St. Andrew Nativity School and served as the first chair of the Board of Trustees for the school. He has been a member of the St. Andrew Catholic Church in Portland, OR since 1991 and coordinates the parish’s annual St. Vincent de Paul Christmas Food Drive. A graduate of University Of Massachusetts-Amherst (BA Political Science/Econ) and Boston College(M.Ed. Secondary Education), he served in the Jesuit Volunteer Corp in Portland, OR from 1991-92.
