Immigration Advocacy Update – 6/27/13

Ignatian Family:

In partnership with the U.S. Jesuit Conference Social & International Ministries office and many other faith-based partners, we have been working to call for action & advocacy that results in a “humane” reform of our country’s comprehensive immigration policy.

Today, the U.S. Senate voted in favor of S.744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act of 2013.  The vote count was 68-32.

You can read a statement about S.744 by the U.S. Jesuit Conference here.

The Ignatian Solidarity Network has worked in partnership with the Ignatian family across the country for many years to educate and advocate for humane immigration reform.  We have hosted Teach-Ins, Summits, Advocacy Training, Webinars, etc. to bring attention to the Gospel call “to welcome the stranger” in our land.  Today’s progress is important but also means that our work does not end.  The journey in solidarity with our immigrant brothers and sisters continues.

The Senate Bill offers many valuable elements including a the a strong version of the DREAM Act and many protections for agricultural and guest workers.  S.744 also offers many disappointments, especially the significant increase in the militarization of the US-Mexico Border that is both costly and detrimental to border communities.

As the legislation moves to the U.S. House of Representatives we will continue to provide educational information and advocacy alerts that emphasize “humane reform.”  If you would like to receive more regular advocacy alerts, you can updated your contact information here.

Thank you for your continued involvement in the Ignatian Solidarity Network!

Peace,
Christopher Kerr
