BOSTON, MA – The Boston College Center for Human Rights and International Justice in partnership with community partners has developed a toolkit entitled Know Your Rights – English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).   The toolkit is designed to foster critical discussion on social issues raised by participants who can simultaneously develop their oral and written English skills through ESOL instruction.

According the Center the Tool Kit was created to weave rights literacy into ESOL instruction.  It includes two units centered on issues which impact migrants, and especially immigrants living in the United States without documentation.  The units provide an overview of a person’s “basic human rights” and offer guidelines on one’s rights if their motor vehicle is stopped by the police.  Toolkit developers hope to establish additional units on topics such as immigration detention and child custody.

The toolkit is available online here.

Boston College is a 2014-2015 Ignatian Solidarity Network member institution.
