For the LORD comforts his people and shows mercy to his afflicted.

Comfort can be hard to come by amidst the struggle against racial injustice. How can we even let ourselves feel a moment of God’s comfort when so many struggle daily to survive, let alone live free and vibrant lives?9442134080_ecdafd1604_h

For black slaves, comfort could be found in Jesus who grants freedom and new life. As an adult, I remember the black spirituals that we sang at our church when I was younger, even though we only had a few black members. Music has the power to calm, console and strengthen our broken hearts and bodies. Black spirituals do the work of God as they bring comfort and catalyze hope amidst times of fear. Let us remember today that Jesus’ eye is on the sparrow.

Why should I feel discouraged
Why should the shadows come
Why should my heart be lonely
And long for heavenly home
When Jesus is my portion?
My constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know he watches me
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me

Reflection Questions:

  • What forms of music bring you comfort and strength?
  • Do we remember how Jesus offered us comfort by saying over and over, “Be not afraid”?
  • How do you best face fears that threaten to weaken the power of God within you?
