A Spirit of Selflessness: Billy Kavula, Ignatian Family Teach-In Planning Committee Member & Spring Hill College Campus Minister Receives Ignatian Medal

Billy Kavula,  longtime member of the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice planning committee, co-chair of the Teach-In Prayer and Liturgy committee, and Teach-In music director was recently awarded the Ignatian Medal for Outstanding Achievement in Jesuit Student Affairs Work by the Jesuit Association for Student Personnel Administrators (JASPA) at their annual conference in San Antonio. Kavula was nominated by Spring Hill College’s office of campus ministry for the exceptional leadership he has provided on campus and on a national level with the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice.

Kavula has been highly engaged with ISN for 10 years, bringing “a spirit of selflessness,” shares ISN program director Kim Miller. “Billy is always the first volunteer to show up at the conference center, ready to help without any questions asked. He is our go-to guy for anything ranging from sound equipment conversations to stuffing participant bags. This combination of talent and willingness to serve has made Billy an invaluable part of making the Teach-In happen year after year.” Kavula works closely with the prayer and liturgy committee in choosing and coordinating the music for two prayer services, the closing liturgy and directs a choir of 40 students and various instrumentalists each year.

Kavula, who has served Spring Hill College campus ministry since 2007, is involved in numerous aspects of campus life. He is engaged not only in planning and coordinating weekly and special liturgies and working with choir members and instrumentalists, but he also serves as the advisor for the International Service Immersion Program (ISIP) and the domestic service/immersion experience program.
