The Princeton Review® has released its eighth annual guide to the most environmentally responsible “green” colleges.

Two Jesuit institutions were included on the list of the top 50 in the U.S. and Canada, with Santa Clara University ranking #12 and Loyola Marymount University ranking #21, recognized as schools making “exceptional commitments to sustainability from academics to career prep to campus clubs and initiatives.”

Other Jesuit schools included on the list of 375 most environmentally responsible colleges, based on an assessment of more than 2000 institutions, include: College of the Holy Cross, Creighton University, Gonzaga University, Loyola University New Orleans, Loyola University Chicago, Marquette University, Saint Louis University, Saint Peter’s University, Seattle University, and the University of Scranton.

Jesuit institutions have for many years integrated sustainability into instruction and institutional practices while supporting student efforts for environmental justice. Pope Francis’s 2015 environmental encyclical, Laudato Si’: On Care for our Common Home, has further energized work for sustainability and environmental education on many campuses in the Jesuit network.

Guide to 375 Green Colleges, 2017” profiles colleges with the most exceptional commitments to sustainability based on their academic offerings and career preparation for students, campus policies, initiatives, and activities. Detailed online profiles give college applicants information about each school’s admission requirements, cost and financial aid, as well as student body facts and stats.

The Princeton Review developed the ranking list using data from its institutional survey for its Green Rating and its surveys of students attending the colleges. Ten data points from the institutional survey were factored into the assessment. Data from the student survey included student ratings of how sustainability issues influenced their education and life on campus; administration and student support for environmental awareness and conservation efforts; and the visibility and impact of student environmental groups.
