We Must Have Faith

Sunday’s Readings
As a recent college graduate, I have been told that I can do anything. The world is my oyster. My generation can “change the world.”
While this has merit, there are times when I hear stories of social injustice—migrant families being broken up at the border or the neighborhood distraught by violence.
I lose faith and hope; it is then that I feel that the justice that so many people work for is for naught.
But then I remember one thing: that our God is not a God of death or injustice, but a God of life, faith, hope, and joy. The Book of Wisdom tells us that “God did not make death.” Jesus says in the Gospel of Mark, “Do not be afraid; just have faith.” These simple words have profound implications. As we continue to work for justice in our communities, neighborhoods, schools, cities, and organizations, we must have faith in God who will always be with us in the task of making this world a better place for everyone.
We must have courage in the face of adversity and fear.
We must have hope that one day people will be able to live in peace—because that is who God is.
When we see, hear, or experience injustice in our communities, may we remember that God is a God of Life and a God of Love. May this be our motivation, therefore, to go out and be that Love for and with others.
Ed Nuñez graduated from Creighton University in 2018 with a BA in justice and society and theology. At Creighton, he was involved with residential life, campus ministry, and service and justice programs. After graduation, Ed did a year of service with Amate House, working as a campus minister and support specialist at Arrupe College of Loyola University Chicago. Currently, Ed is back at Creighton as a graduate assistant in the Schlegel Center for Service and Justice and pursuing his MA in ministry.
Wow! I needed that! I went to the march on Saturday in DC and am feeling the pain of so many heavy things weighing on people in this world. Thank you for your encouragement and wisdom that we must always seek peace by love!

This was just the right message for me this morning, as I often find myself in tears, with so much pain and suffering, and so many limitations on my personal ability to help. Doubt often creeps in. But sometimes, all we can do is pray, pray for the faith to pray. I am going to share this with some of my friends who are social justice warriors.
