ISN Launches Campaign for Season of Creation

The Ignatian Solidarity Network will mark the annual ecumenical Season of Creation, standing alongside thousands of Christians from around the world during a celebratory month encouraging care for our common home.

As a leading partner in this global initiative, ISN has launched a campaign, Season of Creation Challenge: Daily Habits for a Healthy Planet. The campaign encourages participants to hold space in their daily lives for climate action, choosing one daily concrete, simple action to explore a radical new way of interacting with creation. The campaign is a part of ISN’s Ignatian Carbon Challenge, which has, since 2015, united the Ignatian network to respond to today’s environmental crisis and Pope Francis’ call to be responsible stewards of creation. 

Against a backdrop of multiple crises, the 2020 Season of Creation runs from September 1, the Day of Prayer for Creation, through October 4, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of ecology. The season is designed as a way to heal divisions and build healthier local, national, and global communities. 

The theme of repairing the bonds with all of creation is especially pertinent this year, as the world continues to endure both the coronavirus pandemic and the worsening climate emergency.

Pope Francis made the Catholic Church’s involvement in the season official in 2015. He used powerful words last year when he invited all Catholics to take part in the ecumenical initiative. “This is the season for letting our prayer be inspired anew by closeness to nature  . . . to reflect on our lifestyles . . . for undertaking prophetic actions . . . directing the planet towards life, not death.”
