The Greatest Activist

Sunday’s Readings
Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord.
In our readings this week, we hear of the importance in upholding the laws of our God. At first glance, this seems an easy task.
Thou shall not kill, thou shall not commit adultery…
These rules and laws are not only that of the Lord, but that of the society that we have so graciously been creating for thousands of years. I believe there is an inherent goodness in humanity that naturally calls us to not commit heinous acts like these.
However; God’s law goes deeper than this, and we know this because he said so.
Love your neighbor as yourself.
We’ve heard it since vacation bible school. This is where God’s law and society’s law cease to overlap. We are a generation on earth that has been conditioned to hate ‘the other.’ While the readings this week call us to follow God’s law, I challenge you to go further than that: Live it in the 21st century. Live it when you hear a microaggression while in the workplace. Live it by seeking voices that are unlike your own. Live it by actively unlearning the hate embedded into all of our hearts, by unearthing the societal systems and structures that perpetuate it.
The greatest way to live God’s law is to love, and love is the greatest activist of all.

Nora McKee is an intern for the Ignatian Solidarity Network and a senior at John Carroll University from Gibsonia, PA. She is majoring in communication and hopes to work in the media industry to orient hearts towards justice.
Good morning Nora,
We can live God’s law by advocating for those who cannot speak for themselves, the unborn! If we can’t give new life and potential new life a chance “to be” then how can we start midstream by honoring any life at any stage of existence? The basis is “made in the image and likeness of God” and that excludes no one right from the beginning.
Thanks again.
Love is the greatest activist of all – Well said Nora. Long live love.
