The Kino Border Initiative accompanies the Elena Rodriguez family in their sorrow after the jury’s decision to declare Border Patrol agent Lonnie Swartz not guilty of second-degree murder of José Antonio Elena Rodriguez, a Mexican teenager killed in 2012.
These migrants had to fix their eyes ahead, on the destination, to journey through the suffering yet to come. They had to remind themselves of the love of their family that motivated them to set out in the first place.
We hear of Jesus’ crucifixion so often that we are tempted to think there was unshakable unanimity amongst the leaders of Jesus’ day that he was a threat to the power structure and must be arrested. Yet today’s readings remind us that there were dissenting voices.
