On July 5, 2021 human rights activist Fr. Stan Swamy S.J., died at age 84 at the Holy Family Hospital in Mumbai, India while in custody of the Indian government, after months of calls for his release.

Gathered around a statue honoring Mahatma Gandhi, a group of Jesuits and lay colleagues demanded the release of 83-year-old Jesuit priest, Fr. Stan Swamy, who was arrested by the Indian government on false charges of terrorism.

Fr. Stan Swamy, S.J., a Jesuit from India, was arrested on October 8, 2020 and sent to jail under false charges and is one of the latest in a recent string of arrests of human rights defenders in the area.
