The U.S. Catholic bishops have issued a statement urging President Trump to rescind a divisive memorandum excluding undocumented immigrants from inclusion in apportionment of U.S. House of Representative seats.

Responding to the proclamation signed by President Trump announcing a temporary reviewable immigration halt, Archbishop José H. Gomez of Los Angeles, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), Bishop Mario E. Dorsonville, auxiliary bishop of Washington and chairman of the USCCB’s Committee on Migration, and Bishop Jaime Soto of Sacramento and chair of the Board of Directors of the Catholic Legal Immigration Network, Inc. (CLINIC), issued the following response.

U.S. Catholic Bishops Respond to Recent Supreme Court Decision on Public Charge

The U.S. Catholic bishops have issued a statement in response to the Jan. 27 Supreme Court decision allowing the Trump Administration to implement its expanded public charge rule, which allows the denial of legal status or changes in legal status for immigrants using public benefits such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicare, or Federal public housing assistance.
