Each year for the past ten years, your generous donations have helped provide several students at the University of Central America in El Salvador with the scholarships they need to complete their education. We intend to have an in-person event on the McNichols campus, with a performance by Ballet Folklórico México Lindo at 6:45, traditional Salvadoran pupusa dinner at 7, more dancing at 7:30. We will live-stream the program beginning at 7:30 p.m., so that those not with us physically will be able to hear both of our speakers. Tizziana will be with us in Detroit, and Gene, who lives in El Salvador, will be with us virtually. Tizziana Carmona is a Spanish instructor in the Language and Cultural Training Program in the College of Liberal Arts & Education at University of Detroit Mercy. She is a former professor in the department where F. Martín-Baró, S.J., was chair. As she explains, “The martyrs were killed when I was finishing high school, so I am the very first cohort of students that enter the UCA after the assassination of the Jesuits. I can talk about their legacy as the next generation of students that were positively impacted by their teachings.” Gene Palumbo is a freelance journalist. He went to El Salvador in 1980 to cover the civil war and has stayed on. He has reported for the N.Y. Times, National Public Radio, the BBC, and Time Magazine. He will speak about his friendship with Dean Brackley who co-founded the scholarship program. Free for Detroit Mercy students. Others: Donate $10-$50. Venue will be socially distanced at half capacity. Wear masks until seated. Co-sponsored by U Ministry, Jesuit Community at Detroit Mercy, Languages and Cultural Training, International Student Office and the Gesu Peace and Justice Committee.
