IGNATIAN JUSTICE SUMMIT
For College Students
For College Students
Take part in 4 days of networking; sharing goals, challenges, and best practices; sharpening organizing/advocacy skills; praying and learning about the Ignatian call to work for justice; and committing to taking coordinated, collaborative action returning to campus.
The Summit will feature social justice organizers and movement leaders whose work is grounded in Ignatian thought. Presentations and workshops will allow attendees to build organizing/advocacy skills.
Is the Summit Right for Me?
Yes! If you are: currently involved in justice-oriented programming/organizing on campus and have a commitment to continuing to work for more just campuses, communities, and policies. Participants should seek to both grow in their understanding, ideas, and convictions, as well as be willing to share their insights with fellow leaders.
IJS provides training and practical ideas on how to organize, build effective clubs, gain traction on your social justice ideas, and helps answer the question, “How do I get people to show up?”
Sample skills: organizing 101, power mapping and research, strategic action planning, peer coaching, advocacy training, and more!
Connect with students who are equally passionate about social justice issues. You’ll gain new ideas on how to approach roadblocks from students who’ve been through similar issues on their campus and form lasting friendships.
Try out your new skills in a safe and supportive space.
Learn more about the Jesuit/Ignatian call to work for justice, and find a welcoming space for stillness, prayer, and reflection.
Sample opportunities: learning about key Jesuits and Jesuit mission as it relates to faith and justice work throughout the summit; daily prayer/reflection grounded in Ignatian spirituality
With your new skills, develop an individual or collaborative action plan for the issue you’re most passionate about.
We’ve seen students tackle curriculum offerings, better integrate justice clubs on campus, start undocu funds, and create widespread education and advocacy events, to name a few ideas.
We want to help the folks who send students support their new skills and action plans upon their return. This year, we’re offering two support calls for staff to learn more about what their students will experience during the summit and tips for helping their students flourish. Campus staff will also be provided with recordings of all of the key presentations to review if desired.
Tentative Support Call Dates:
2024 Presenters Coming Soon
Organizer, Sunrise Movement
Associate Director of Education and Advocacy, Kino Border Initiative
Provincial Assistant for Social Ministry Organizing, Jesuits West
Migration Coordinator for Youth Engagement, Ignatian Solidarity Network
Director of Integral Ecology, Ignatian Solidarity Network
Each university is welcome to register up to 8 students. We highly recommend sending both students who are leaders in organizing and advocacy on your campus, in addition to a few students who are developing their leadership skills. The Summit is a great follow up to the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice, particularly for student delegation leaders. We also recommend it for any rising or established club leaders.
Each university faculty/staff person completing the group registration will be asked to submit the name and contact information for all Summit participants no later than June 12, 2024.
