Cristo Rey High School is accepting applications for a full-time High School Counselor.

POSITION: High School Counselor







Cristo Rey Sacramento, rooted in the traditions of the Sisters of Mercy and the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) transforms lives by providing a Catholic, college preparatory education and professional work experience to high school students with limited financial resources.


  • Bachelor’s degree minimum in psychology, child development or related field; Master’s degree preferred
  • PPS credential

JOB SUMMARY: The counselor provides academic and personal guidance.


  • Manage a caseload of approximately 200 students
  • Work with the Dean of Students, Principal, and Director of Student Support to bridge the gap between academic and social-emotional needs
  • Facilitate communication between families, students and teachers in terms of academic support, including (but not limited to) IEP and 504 accommodations
  • Develop and implement college readiness curriculum to 9th & 10th grade students


  • Implement a College Knowledge class for 9th & 10th grade students that will introduce them to the college-going process, applications, financial aid, and scholarships
  • Provide college information and resources to parents and families
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the counseling staff, especially with the college counseling program
  • Attend local and Cristo Rey network college conferences
  • Track and collaborate with our Cristo Rey network on college applications, acceptances, and attendance
  • Plan and coordinate in person or virtual college visits to public and private colleges
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of financial aid workshops for students and parents to complete FAFSA or CADA

Parents and Families

  • Work with the Counseling Department and Principal to provide parent information nights on a monthly basis.
    Topics would include social-emotional, parenting, technology, and college issues
  • Constant communication between counselor and families related to a students academic and social well-being
  • Provide opportunities for family engagement and community building events


  • Counsel students experiencing personal or family difficulties and emotional distress
  • Provide individual and group short-term counseling, and referrals
  • Provide evidence base and multicultural counseling
  • Coordinate with students’ off-campus counselors, coordinate on-campus sessions, and disseminate information to appropriate staff
  • Maintain confidentiality and facilitate family and school communication
  • Refer students to community agencies, and other resources as necessary


  • Attend meetings with administration and faculty to coordinate services provided to students
  • Provide information to and solicit information from teachers
  • Other duties related to the role of Counselor as assigned by the Principal


  • Excellent interpersonal skills and organization, proficient computer skills
  • Teamwork mentality to work effectively with other counselors, faculty and staff
  • Ability to multitask and work in a dynamic, fast paced educational environment
  • Experience with an ethnically diverse student population
  • Spanish fluency
  • Commitment to the mission of Catholic education
  • Clear and effective oral and written communication
  • Experience in adolescent and adult programming
  • Experience working with first-generation and low-income students
  • Experience helping students in a crisis or 5150
  • Knowledge of the University or California, California State University, and Private college system.
