EVkids empowers low-income Boston youth with the skills and confidence needed to realize their potential. We create a community of support through 1-on-1 multi-year academic mentoring relationships, professional family engagement and school advocacy, college success advising, and a summer camp at our 9-acre site in Vermont. As an organization with roots in the Catholic commitment to social justice, EVkids helps low-income, academically vulnerable students grades 4 to 12 aspire to and achieve college acceptance and enrollment as first-generation college attendees. EVcorps volunteers also graduate to become lifelong agents of positive social change.
EVcorps student volunteer tutors come from local universities, including Harvard, Boston College, Tufts, UMassBoston, and Northeastern. Tutoring pairs meet weekly at four EVkids after-school Tutoring sites, three in Dorchester and one in Roxbury. EVkids supports its volunteers through community- and campus-based events, as well as on- and off-site reflections. We currently support 100 tutor-tutee matches with plans to expand to 125-130 in SY21-22. We also host 36 campers each summer at EVkids Camp.

This is a part-time (20 hours per week) 9-month (September-May) position for the 2021-2022 academic year.
The Assistant Tutor Director/Chaplain works closely with the Tutor Director – Chaplain, as well as a another Asst. Tutor Director/Chaplain. Asst. Tutor Director/Chaplains help with EVcorps volunteer recruitment, training, and support. Tasks include working with student coordinators, periodically attending tutoring to engage EVcorps volunteers on site, as well as organizing regular reflections and meaning-making opportunities for tutors. Asst. Tutor Director/Chaplains are responsible for on-campus community events, as well as individual check-ins each semester with around 30 tutor volunteers, whether virtually or in-person, at their respective campuses.
Special projects include supporting student coordinator leadership formation, assisting with an annual winter EVcorps retreat, a yearly Social Justice In-Service, as well as participating in occasional Saturday training, mentoring, and community events. Asst. Tutor Director/Chaplains reports directly to the Tutor Director/Chaplain, and attend Tutor Director/Chaplain (TDC) team, program staff, and peer supervision weekly meetings, as well as monthly all-staff meetings.
● Work with the TDC team to serve student coordinators at various campuses to implement effective volunteer recruitment, offer regular avenues for individual and group reflection, and cultivate leadership in student coordinators;
● Assist in developing and stewarding campus partnerships with service and religiously-affiliated student and university entities;
● Help interview and select EVcorps volunteers and help lead tutor trainings;
● Attend Tutoring sessions 1 to 2 times per month to engage volunteers on site or virtually;
● Work closely with the TDC team and student coordinators to plan community and mentoring events, such as bi-annual campus Tutor-Tutee Days;
● Participate in program evaluation and reporting.
● Bachelor’s Degree in education, theology, or related field required, some Master’s level work preferred;
● 2+ years experience in campus ministry, education, or mentoring/tutoring;
● Experience in leading spiritual/theological reflection;
● Professional experience working with diverse populations including low-income and ethnically diverse populations, school-age children, university students, parents, educators, and campus ministers;
● Comfort navigating multiple work sites and demands in a flexible and professional environment;
● Experience in project and event management;
● Excellent written and computer skills, including using Google Suite, Microsoft Office, and Salesforce.
● Understanding of and commitment to faith-based social justice work, with a passion for the mission of EVkids;
● Ability to work collaboratively with an energized, committed, and diverse team;
● Persuasive and passionate communication skills;
● Strong interpersonal social skills;
● Detail-oriented and able to be creative and self-supervising in maintaining your own schedule that will vary week to week;
● Cultural sensitivity and humility;
● Access to a reliable vehicle helpful;
● Multilingual and/or bi-cultural a plus.
SALARY: $24/hour with 13 paid holidays per school year
