Position Summary

The Communications Manager envisions, develops, executes, and continually improves the organization’s communications and public relations strategy. Reporting to and working closely with the Executive Director, this highly visible management position is responsible for broadening MKLM’s visibility in the Catholic and secular arenas. The Communications Manager works cross-functionally to curate inspiring narratives of mission; produce and disseminate all marketing communications materials, including donor, program, and brand-building collateral; build awareness of mission and MKLM through strategic digital communications, marketing, public relations, media relations, and events; oversee MKLM’s branding and image; oversee the management of the MKLM website, social media, e-newsletters, and other digital media.

The ideal candidate brings innovation, creativity, and vision for cultivating awareness of, engagement in, and support of MKLM’s mission to transform the lives of those in need. The Communications Manager will work in a collaborative environment with a dedicated, mission-oriented staff to develop, execute, and achieve ambitious public relations goals. S/he will be an imaginative, self-motivated leader – a skilled storyteller with a passion for international mission and the Maryknoll charism, serving with the highest integrity, modeling stewardship, and possessing sound judgment.




·         Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent (Master’s degree preferable) from a recognized institution



·         5+ years of experience in a related field (communications, marketing, journalism, public relations)

·         Demonstrated experience in strategic management of multiple communications channels

·         Demonstrated experience in communications and public relations tasks, incl. journalistic feature and news writing; digital communications; web development, design, and maintenance; SEO; blogging and content creation; social media; video creation and editing; photography; proof-reading; graphic design; production; branding; and media relations


Skills and Abilities:

·         Demonstrated understanding of communications and public relations concepts, practices, and procedures (incl. all tasks listed under Experience)

·         Skilled and confident user in desktop applications such as MSOffice, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Adobe Creative Cloud, including InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Premiere Pro, and Spark; WordPress CMS; Facebook Business Suite, Sprout Social, or Hootsuite; and Google Analytics

·         Full proficiency in spoken and written English required; full proficiency in Spanish is a significant asset

·         Excellent written and oral communication skills, conveying messages to different audiences using diverse media

·         Good multitasking and organizational ability

·         Ability to analyze information from different sources and to synthesize this information into coherent and brief communication documents

·         Ability to build and maintain good relationships with national and local media representatives

·         Collaborative management style and ability to contribute to the organization’s strategic direction

·         Proactive approach to meeting deadlines and delivering results with limited supervision

·         Knowledge of and passion for global mission, social justice, Catholic Social Teaching, and contemplation in action



·         Manage Digital Communications/Social Media consultant

·         Manage relations with Graphic Designer, Printer and other vendors (potentially, as needed: Web Developer; Freelance Writer, Translator, Transcriber, Photographer, Videographer, etc.)




Strategic Management:

·         Set overall communications and public relations strategy, including goals, priorities, calendars, targets, and measurements for success

·         Develop, implement, and evaluate strategy for public engagement, messaging, and storytelling related to mission, MKLM, its partners, and its diverse audiences; special attention must be given to Hispanic-Latino Catholic community and other cultural families

·         Employ and manage a full range of technologies, tools, event calendars, and other channels to increase MKLM’s profile as a thought leader in international mission

·         Liaise with external partners – including other Maryknoll entities and other mission and justice organizations – to ensure opportunities for strong collaboration, as well as support, exposure, and visibility for MKLM around contemporary models and trends in mission

·         Remain informed of issues and relevant policies in Maryknoll and Catholic Social Teaching

·         Develop and maintain an organizational communications structure within MKLM providing leadership, strategic direction, and general skills that motivate staff and missioners and foster cross-functional synergy

·         Provide guidelines and training for staff, missioners, and candidates to improve storytelling and support communications and public relations efforts

·         Serve as convener and facilitator of the monthly Social Media Meeting

·         Prepare and oversee Communications budget administration

·         Prepare quarterly communications reports for Board of Directors.


Content Creation

·         Create strategic promotional and marketing materials to meet diverse messaging needs (e.g., multicultural audiences, publications, e-newsletters, social media, digital platforms, MKLM events, press releases, articles, blogs, etc.)

·         Collaborate closely with Maryknoll and Misioneros magazine staff on creating MKLM stories and ads

·         Cultivate relationships and create and place MKLM stories or arrange for MKLM coverage with national, regional, and local Catholic and secular media outlets and publications

·         Write clear and compelling features, news stories, blog posts, and press releases

·         Plan, develop, coordinate, and edit (for clarity, consistency, house style, voice, and message) contributions from missioners and staff to newsletters, the website, social media, MKLM’s and external publications, blogs, brochures, videos, photos, etc.

·         Shoot, edit, and produce videos for use on the website, in social media, and e-newsletters

·         Plan, develop, coordinate, and edit videos, audio recordings and live contributions from missioners for virtual events (MKLM Zoom webinars, celebrations, and gatherings)

·         Manage internal communications forum, including Monday Bulletin, blogs, etc.

·         Respond to email from the general public and disseminate incoming messages to appropriate department

·         Represent MKLM at internal and external events as required


Digital Communications

·         Develop and implement MKLM’s website, e-newsletter, and social media strategy to increase awareness, support fundraising, and foster recruitment of missioners

·         Oversee consistent content creation and management of website, e-newsletters, and social media

·         Lead the research, planning, implementation, and evaluation of the long-term development of MKLM web and digital presence

·         Coordinate social media team’s collaborative efforts on Facebook and Instagram

·         Provide web, e-newsletter, and social media analytic reporting to monitor strategic progress


Publications and Materials

·         Coordinate the content, design, and production of all internal and external MKLM communications, publications, advertisements, annual reports and other collaterals and materials, maintaining consistency in content, appearance and format in all


Brand Management

·         Maintain and continually update house style guide and brand standards for MKLM

·         Maintain, implement, oversee, and adjust (as needed) strong MKLM visual branding

·         Maintain and promote use of MKLM digital asset management tool across a range of communications forms, with a priority on acquiring current videos and photos of MKLM missioners in action
