The University of Saint Mary is a Roman Catholic, liberal arts university located in Leavenworth, Kansas, just 25 minutes away from Kansas City. The University of Saint Mary is a Catholic university sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth. The Campus Minister is responsible for facilitating opportunities for the faith development of all students at the University of Saint Mary and coordinating liturgical services for the community. The minster encourages students to become active members of the faith community through worship, education, service, and community development while providing for the pastoral needs of each person. The minister encourages persons of all faiths to be involved in their individual faith communities. This position is a 10-month position working August 1st-May 31st.
Develops, plans, and leads spiritual development program for USM undergraduate and graduate students to Articulate their own self-understanding, particularly as it relates to the dynamic of faith, spirituality, and human transcendence.
Plans and organizes prayer and religious services, plans to celebrate and recognize each liturgical season on a regular basis and for special events to develop a deeper understanding of what the Catholic tradition teaches about what it means to be human.
Plans and prepares for all liturgical celebrations, including Matriculation, Convocation and Commencement; recruits; trains; and organizes music ministers, lectors, Eucharistic ministers, servers, and communion sacristan
Facilitates ecumenical awareness in the campus community by sponsoring opportunities for students of various faith traditions for worship, prayers, and study
Proactively relates to students and engages with students with varying or no faith background
Plans and conducts student retreats each academic year
Develops, plans, and leads theological reflection, ecumenical and inter-religious activities.
Coordinates the USM Mission Council’s Faculty/Staff monthly “Living the Mission” awards
Develops and implements programs for spiritual development as needed, e.g., Bible scripture studies, small faith communities, Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), prayer, and socials, etc. and promote and facilitate dialog with the Christian tradition as it applies to modern society.
Plans and coordinates ongoing education in Vincentian spirituality
Plans and coordinates faith in action especially through the development, implementation, and coordination of community service projects and alternative break trips
Creates opportunities for students to engage in service and social justice efforts
Plans and coordinates community learning service experiences throughout the year
Develops and mentors student leaders and supervises student leaders in Campus Ministry initiatives to connect their own gifts and abilities to needs of the world that they can meet to bring about the common good.
Provides pastoral care as needed for the university community.
Works with Keleher Learning Common & Student Development staff to develop and promote student engagement, involvement, and student success programs and initiatives
Actively contributes to various university committees and partnerships.
Submits and manages budget, coordinates fundraising to support student programming and alternative break trips
Submits a written, comprehensive annual report to supervisor no later than June 1
Performs other job-related duties as assigned
Master’s Degree in Catholic Theology, Divinity or Pastoral Ministry
2-3 years pastoral experience
Ability to engage in a collaborative style of ministry within an ethnically and religiously diverse university community.
Strong work ethic.
Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
Ability to lead spiritual reflection.
Strong leadership, planning, supervisory, and communication skills.
