NEW ORLEANS, LA – Student interpreters at Loyola University New Orleans are lending their skills to help local lawyers and other immigration advocates aid an influx of unaccompanied minors fleeing from Central America.

The Spanish National Court has decided unanimously that Spain has jurisdiction to investigate the November 16, 1989 massacre of the Jesuits and their two companions murdered at the University of Central America.

Earlier this week twenty-four national faith-based organizations, including the Ignatian Solidarity Network delivered a letter to President Barack Obama, Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security Jeh Johnson, and Attorney General Eric Holder urging them to address human and civil rights violations, lack of transparency, and governance issues that continue within the U.S. government’s immigration enforcement practices.

Earlier this week forty national religious leaders called on President Obama to ensure the due process rights of unaccompanied children fleeing violence in Central America as the Administration considers its next steps on immigration.

Today, the Ignatian Solidarity Network joined more than 300 faith-based organizations delivered a letter to President Barack Obama and Members of Congress urging protection, care and legal counsel for the thousands of Central American children who have fled escalating violence, conflict and exploitation in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.

The Ignatian Solidarity Network (ISN) Board of Directors has unanimously voted to welcome Maureen Beckman, Salvador Colon, Paris Jones, and Justin White, as directors. The new members of ISN’s national governance board will serve three year terms.

Over 1,200 alumni of Jesuit universities and high schools have sent a letter this week to fellow alumni in the U.S. House of Representatives calling on them to pass comprehensive immigration reform legislation. The group forty-three House members, which includes Speaker of the House Representative John Boehner (Xavier University ‘77) have attended one or more of the 28 universities and 60 high schools sponsored by the Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) in the United States.

National Catholic organizations are joining Pope Francis in calling for prayers of peace in the midst of increasing violence in Iraq.

National Catholic leaders, including ISN executive director, Christopher Kerr, are sending a message to Speaker John Boehner today, calling on the U.S. House of Representatives to pass “humane and practical immigration reform.”
