St. Thomas More in Decatur tithes 10% of total parish revenue from the previous year during the current fiscal year. This tithe is given to organizations in the form of grants, enabling the parish to provide both annual support for scholarships, emergency assistance, crisis pregnancy volunteers, etc., and one-time grants that help organizations grow to expand their mission. The grant process is deliberative, and recipients are selected to support local, national, and international programs providing a diverse range of services in an impactful way while developing connections with the organizations. For 2018 and 2019, the grant committee has concentrated on providing grants that support the parish social justice focuses for the year (immigration and refugees for 2018 and 2019, along with homelessness and its root causes for 2019). The parish also has a social justice savings account so that even if revenue drops, our social justice commitments will not be cut.
