<\/a><\/p>\n BY ISN STAFF<\/a> |\u00a0<\/strong>April 15, 2014<\/em><\/p>\n Carlos Mej\u00eda Orellana, a journalist and marketing manager for Radio Progresso was found murdered in his home in the northern city of El Progreso on the night of Friday, April 11, 2014. He was stabbed several times in the chest.<\/p>\n Mej\u00eda had worked for\u00a0nearly 15 years\u00a0for El Progreso-based\u00a0Radio Progreso<\/a>, a Jesuit-run human rights radio station affiliated with Equipo de Reflexi\u00f3n, Investigaci\u00f3n y Comunicaci\u00f3n\u00a0(ERIC), a social analysis and action center. Radio Progeso was one of the many Honduran media that criticized the 2009 coup d’\u00e9tat.<\/p>\n Jesuit Father Ismael Moreno, S.J. (Director of Radio Progesso and ERIC) stated publicly at a press conference on Saturday, April 12 that\u00a016\u00a0ERIC\/Radio Progeso employees, including Mejia,\u00a0have received significant death threats since the 2009 Honduran coup. \u00a0Fr. Moreno has also previously testified\u00a0before the U.S. Congress at the Tom Lantos Human Rights Commission regarding the human rights situation in Honduras and the fear he and his staff\u00a0and others in the journalism sector\u00a0experience. \u00a0Moreno will speak at the Ignatian Solidarity Network’s 2014 Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice<\/a> in Washington DC regarding the human rights situation in Honduras.<\/p>\n On Tuesday, April 15,\u00a0U.S. Representatives McGovern (MA), Farr (CA) and Schakowsky (IL) released a statement<\/a>\u00a0expressing sympathy for Mejia’s family and calling on Honduran officials to enact a full investigation of the murder.<\/p>\n We will continue to provide updates.<\/p>\n Our prayers and condolences to Carlos’ family, the Radio Progeso\/ERIC staff and for peace in Honduras.<\/p>\n MEDIA COVERAGE:<\/strong> STATEMENTS REGARDING CARLOS’ MURDER:<\/strong>
