Position
Emmaus Farm is a nonprofit Catholic retreat center in rural Appalachia which connects people of diverse backgrounds to the community of Lewis County, Kentucky. Through our ministry, we guide retreat groups (especially high school and college students) to grow in our core values of service, simplicity, community, and prayer. We are currently undergoing an exciting period of revitalization, as we discover new challenges facing the groups we serve and new opportunities for growth.

The Executive Director will play a vital role in defining the path forward for the Farm. Building upon the past five years of our history, they will develop and nourish relationships with
stakeholders in the local community, the network of Appalachian Catholic organizations, and the broader world of youth and campus ministry.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for Emmaus Farm’s volunteer program, facilities, staff, and execution of its mission. They will initially develop deep knowledge of the field, core programs, operations, and business plan. They will orchestrate weeklong retreats consisting of Appalachian cultural immersion, community service, and spiritual reflection with an emphasis on Catholic Social Teaching. The role will be exciting for a creative self-starter with a passion for ministry and service, who can appreciate the serenity and beauty of the rural retreat setting.

Primary Responsibilities

• Craft weekly schedules of programming for groups, incorporating service projects, visits to local cultural institutions, and opportunities for spiritual growth
• Conduct ongoing outreach and a needs assessment in the local community to identify and establish ways for the Farm to support people and agencies in Lewis County
• Oversee retreat logistics, including transportation and meal planning and preparation Manage the maintenance of Farm property
• Recruit and schedule groups, collect their fees, and make sure they have necessary information, forms, and directions
• Attend national and regional ministry networking events (in person and online) to promote the mission of the Farm
• Keep the Emmaus Farm website up to date and accurate; maintain a presence on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and other social media sites

• Raise funds for the Farm’s operations through grant writing and organizing regular fundraising
campaigns and events
• Develop and enhance the network of donors and alumni through regular outreach
• Design the annual budget in coordination with the Board of Directors
• Oversee and enforce budget plans
• File annual nonprofit paperwork, including financial and tax forms, such as the Form 990
• Maintain payments for all subscriptions, memberships, utilities, insurance, and other operating costs
• Proactively seek opportunities for professional development and spiritual growth
• Recruit, hire, and manage Farm staff as necessary
• Propose and implement additional ideas for furthering the mission and maintaining financial health of the organization
• Perform other duties as instructed by the Board of Directors

The Executive Director will be thoroughly committed to Emmaus Farm’s mission. All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience. Concrete demonstrable experience and other qualifications include:
• At least a bachelor’s degree
• Proven track record of effective leadership
• Ability to point to specific examples of having developed strategies that have taken an organization to the next stage of growth
• Excellence in organizational management with the ability to coach staff, manage, and develop high-performance teams, set and achieve strategic objectives, and manage a budget
• Ability to work effectively in collaboration with diverse groups of people
• Unwavering commitment to quality retreats and volunteer experiences at Emmaus Farm
• Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience
• Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
• Proven success with multidisciplinary project management
• Orientation towards action and innovation
• Ability to work and problem solve independently with minimal oversight
• Financial competency, preferably including experience with bookkeeping and tax laws
• Passion, idealism, integrity, positive attitude
• Advanced degree preferred (but not necessary), with at least 3 years of management experience,
• Willingness to relocate to Vanceburg, KY
