Making Big Strides on World Fair Trade Day

May 14th marks World Fair Trade Day, which celebrates the global effort to ensure trade benefits everyone, including the world’s most vulnerable populations. With the current poverty rates (more than 2.7 billion people living on $2 a day) and global effects of unsustainable agriculture and production practices in places like Indonesia and Nicaragua, now is the time to celebrate this fair economic model.

Solidarity Stories: “Simple” Solidarity

My first experience in Nicaragua was extraordinary and confirmed my notion that when it comes to immersions, there is no such thing as “just another trip.” Past experiences with service immersion trips had me enthusiastic about this opportunity to lead as an assistant director of the Canisius High School Compañeros program. Being partially responsible for eight young men in a foreign country was daunting, yet I was also excited to be in a position of influence for a group of guys who had never had this type of international experience.

Ignatian Solidarity Network honored Don MacMillan, S.J. with the Robert M. Holstein "Faith Doing Justice" Award on Tuesday April 24, 2012 at Boston College. More than 125 people gathered to celebrate Macmillan's tremendous witness to the social teachings of Catholic faith through his solidarity with the economically poor and marginalized in the United States and around the world.
