Global Ignatian Network to Gather for Virtual Vigil for Season of Creation

BY ISN STAFF | September 22, 2020

On Friday, September 25, 2020, members of the global Jesuit and broader Catholic network will gather virtually in prayer during Breathing Together: Global Ignatian Prayer Vigil for the Season of Creation

Season of Creation

The vigil is organized by a number of Jesuit organizations and networks, including the Ignatian Solidarity Network and the Jesuit Conference of Canada and the United States’ Office of Justice and Ecology, under the umbrella of the Social Justice and Ecology Secretariat. The vigil falls during the Season of Creation and focuses on the lungs of our world, focused on the disruption between “the balance between God, creation and humanity,” and “the consequences of that disharmony in our changing climate.” The vigil focuses on action for ecological conversion and justice. Testimonies and reflections will be shared from Amazonia, Congo basin, and Asian forests.

“Breath has been a central theme in 2020: from the COVID-19 pandemic that has wreaked havoc on people’s lungs and has put many on ventilators, to wildfires that have decreased air quality on the West Coast of the United States with smoke reaching as far as Europe, to George Floyd’s cry of “I can’t breathe” as he was killed by police officers, we acknowledge the gift of God’s life that is given to us with each next breath has been threatened,” shared Brenna Davis, ISN’s director of Education for Justice and environmental initiatives. “This Friday, we will unite as a global community to breathe together and pray for the ability to change our personal habits as well as any social or political structures that prevent the breath of life from prevailing throughout creation. We hope that you will join us in this important moment of prayer.”

Participants are invited to tune in live for the prayer experience on the Jesuits Global YouTube Channel at 8PM ET/5PM PT.

ISN is additionally observing the annual ecumenical Season of Creation, through a daily campaign, standing alongside thousands of Christians from around the world during a celebratory month encouraging care for our common home. The Season of Creation Challenge: Daily Habits for a Healthy Planet encourages participants to hold space in their daily lives for climate action, choosing one daily concrete, simple action to explore a radical new way of interacting with creation.
