This Lent, people around the world have been saying farewell to food waste through ISN’s Lenten Food Waste Fast. Participants are invited into reflection, prayer, and action around a waste-focused challenge each week.
Let’s get up to speed. Food waste fast cliff notes for weeks 1-4:
Week 1 invited participants to start with a clean slate (errr…fridge) by getting creative with leftovers using food scrap recipes. The following week offered storage tips such as: separate your fruits and vegetables, and don’t wash produce until right before you plan to eat it. Fruits emit ethylene gas that can ripen and spoil vegetables quickly if stored together. Use these tips to store fruits and veggies correctly.
As the realities of COVID-19 intensified, weeks 3 and 4 shifted toward a focus on mindfulness, gratitude, and education. Week 3 encouraged participants to avoid emotional purchases by making a meal plan and sticking to a shopping list. You can build a step by step meal and shopping plan with Meal Prep Mate or use one of their suggested plans as you organize your meals for the upcoming week. Week 4 shared resources on mindful eating and ways to connecting cooking to prayer.
