Rockhurst University Jesuits Reflect on Anniversary of Jesuit Martyrs

The following are reflections from members of the Jesuit community of Rockhurst University on the 25th anniversary of the Jesuit martyrs and their companions. The former Missouri Province (now part of the United States Central Southern Province) of the Jesuits has had a long-term relationship with the Central American Province, creating opportunities for many interactions with the Jesuits and the University of Central America in El Salvador over the years.

“Blood in the Backyard” National Premiere at Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice 2014

WASHINGTON, DC – This year’s Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice will feature the national premiere of “Blood in the Backyard,” a documentary depicting the 1989 murders and subsequent legacy of the Jesuit martyrs and their companions in El Salvador. The documentary is produced and directed by Loyola Productions, a Los Angeles-based, nonprofit creative media company that builds on the more than 450-year-old Jesuit tradition of effective involvement in the communication arts. The documentary includes interviews with U.S. Representative Jim McGovern, former U.S. Ambassador to El Salvador William Walker, liberation theologian Jon Sobrino, S.J., and Chema Tojeira, S.J., Jesuit provincial in Central America at the time of the Salvadoran muders. Over 1,300 individuals affiliated with Jesuit institutions and the larger Catholic Church will converge at the Teach-In, November 15-17 in Washington, D.C. to experience “Blood in the Backyard,” which will be shown at approximately at 9 PM on Saturday, November 15.

Saint Peter’s University Opens Center for Undocumented Students

Saint Peter’s University announced today the opening of The Center for Undocumented Students (TCUS). The mission of TCUS is to support the academic work of undocumented students at the University, to shed intellectual light on the political and economic realities of immigration in our world today and to create a community where undocumented students feel welcome. TCUS will work with community organizations, government agencies, high schools and other Jesuit colleges and universities to create better access to higher education and increase retention rates among undocumented youth.
