IGNATIAN FAMILY TEACH-IN FOR JUSTICE 2024
October 26-28 | Washington, D.C.
Learn, pray, and advocate for justice at the largest annual Catholic social justice gathering in the United States.
The Teach-In is a place for members of the Ignatian family (Jesuit institutions and larger church) to be empowered, re-energized, inspired, challenged, and supported by a community that sees faith and justice integrally linked. Now in its 26th year, the Teach-In has a rich history rooted in honoring the Jesuits and their companions who were martyred in El Salvador in 1989.

Thirty-five years ago, U.S.-trained soldiers murdered six Jesuits and two lay companions in El Salvador in an attempt to silence the Jesuits for their outspoken—and faith-based—advocacy against violence and oppression in the midst of the Salvadoran civil war. Their spirit of justice –informed by faith– has been kept alive by so many who refuse to let death have the final word, such as Jesuit Fr. Jon Sobrino, who was part of the martyrs’ Jesuit community but was away during the attack.
Sobrino easily could have abandoned hope; instead, his work has been animated by the spirit of his brothers: “I think they believed in a God of life…A God who gives meaning and salvation to our lives and hence a radical hope.” This same spirit guides the work of the Ignatian Solidarity Network and the Ignatian Family Teach-In for Justice.
In 2024, our church and world continue to be marred by sinful realities such as war, violence, environmental destruction, and polarization. Yet, our Catholic faith calls us to a countercultural response driven by hope. Not a hope reduced to blind optimism, but one rooted in the steadfast promise of a loving God and in the prophetic witness of generations who have worked to move us forward. As Pope Francis commented, “The witness of…a great number of those who work for peace and justice has increasingly convinced me that we need to combat a deficit of hope that stifles dreams and the silent cry that reaches to heaven and moves the heart of God.” Together, let us combat this deficit of hope by strengthening the bonds of our shared community, drawing resilience from generations who have paved the way, and remaining steadfastly rooted in a God of resurrection.
