In today’s gospel, no one could be indifferent when confronted with Jesus’ message. His message caused division. How do we judge a man from Galilee? Do we really take this man seriously—listen to what he says? Some believed he was a prophet, some the Messiah, and still to others he was neither. The guards tried to arrest him, but Jesus’ words stopped them. They were amazed. The chief priests and Pharisees were contemptuous and snide. Nicodemus lacked courage and conviction. His heart told him to defend Jesus, but his head told him not to take the risk.

There will come a time when we are like the guards—amazed by Jesus’ words. Other times we will be skeptical of the gospel like the Pharisees and the chief priests. Yet, still at other times, we will be like Nicodemus. Our biggest fear will be that we will hear Jesus’ words and walk away, content to settle for less.

Are you ready to stand with Jesus and live out his gospel message?

Reflection Questions:

  1. Have you ever heard a racially insensitive statement or joke and chosen to walk away?
  2. Where have you been timid in the cause for racial justice?
